I hope this MMail finds you well, Doctor Popodopoulos, our clearing team recently cleared out the Scorpion-7 Building downtown, it was quite a difficulty to do so. We found, in the offices, something named "Project Absorption". The point of the project was to create a 'Horde Beacon' which would attract lesser beings and animals to create weaponry. Imagine if we did that! All the rats and critters infesting the buildings would flood toward the beacon, allowing for us to easily wipe them out and granting us weaponry to fend off the hordes!

The History of Gadsden. By Charles Newell.
Chapter 24 - Calico City
Calico City is, by far, the largest city in the greater Gadsden area. The largest other cities surrounding are of Phoneix, Tuscon, and Albuquerque. Calico City was originally named Sulphur Springs after the slightly sulphurous springs that used to flow around the area. Calico City's Springs were discovered in 1755 by adventurer and explorer Johan Kreigberg. After discovering the oasis, he built a small cabin along the banks for himself and other explorers. It eventually bacame a hotel in 1759, in business from then to 1975 when it burned down and was never rebuilt. It remains the oldest buisness in Gadsden.
The founding of the city itself was a similar way. In September of 1833 trader Mark Bowlinne would take a night of rest in the Sulphur Springs Inn. He found the lonesome location curious, how had a lone hotel survived so long? He had found his answer when asking the Inn's owner, the great-granddaughter of Johan Kreigberg. She explained that passing traders would allow enough material to continue until the next caravan. Realizing the traffic of the area, Bowlinne would found a store next to the Inn in 1834. The store would gain much business, and with his success and ability, he married the Innskeeper, Mary Kreigberg.
Several years would pass, and by this point many others saw Bowlinnes idea to be ingenius, with 8 restaurants, 10 hotels, 7 churches, and many other businesses being founded in 1846. (Exact businesses and names listed in page 994, category 5) In 1847, Bowlinne would be elected mayor of the township, and in the same year, several mines would open nearby, boosting the population of the then still named Sulphur Springs. Population would boom exceptionally in the 1849 Californian Gold Rush, where thousands of people worldwide would flood the West to search for gold.
Calico would continue to grow and gain success until 1934-1939 where the springs first ran dry. This period of years would be called the "Dry Years" of Calico. Their problems would subside in 1941 when the Gadsden Prairie Association discovered the Gadwoll Aquifier, the world's biggest desert aquifier. To this day, the Gadwoll Aquifier continues to pump out millions of gallons of clean drinking water to the population of Gadsden, Arizona, and New Mexico. The process of how the aquifier gains water every year from the Sierras Grandes is detailled in chapter 54.
Calico's WW2 years were also that of growth. In 1943 the GPA would build the Calico City Railway for the transportation of resources to the West. This would bring the population to increase further. The last noticable gain in population came in 1953 when the Calico Desert Oil & Natural Gas Company, (subsidized to Big J in 1997) discovered oil pockets in the Calico Region. By this point, the medium-sized township was called Bowlinneville, but it would be renamed to Calico City in 1965 when grateful residents of the town realized how much the Calico Desert Oil & Natural Gas Company had helped their then poor community.
In fact, Calico City felt such feelings toward said company that they paid for the Las Dunas Oil and Natural Gas Refinery to be built in the East. Seeing the thankfulness of the population, Big J would build their regional HQ in the town center in 2004. It was not welcomed however. (See terrorism in Gadsden in Chapter 25.)

【Dolph Newell Canyon】
The History of Gadsden. By Charles Newell.
Chapter 16 - Newell Canyon.
Newell Canyon, as many know, is a beautiful strip of wooded canyon SouthEast of Philo. The location houses many redwood trees, and a well-known camping lodge as well. However, many do not know of the almost secret, unfinished, wild west era railroad bridge. At this location is an excellently-preserved 1879 Western Rail passenger steam locomotive. One may wonder as to why such a train and bridge are here, in the middle of the woods, in the middle of a desert canyon. The answer to such a question is most interesting. In the morning hours of May 7th 1881 Dolph Newell, my Great Grandfather, a train conductor, was riding along the railroad route 47 (a route still used today!). He had incorrectly heard that a new route, route 49, a pathway constructed to cross the then unnamed canyon and slowly decline to the floor, was completed. However, it was most obviously not completed. Dolph Newell changed tracks and exited the regular route, speeding along the new path excitedly. This for roughly 24 minutes, until he and 34 passengers flew off the tracks and crashed into the floor of the unnamed canyon. This was the worst Gadsden railroad accident until 1974, (See Chapter 39) and 33 people died. The only survivor was a 7 year old girl named Dorothy Crow, future wife of Ralph Levi, the governer of Gadsden from 1911-1914. In 1883, in memorium of the passed passengers and trusting engineer, the town of Philo named the Canyon Dolph Newell Canyon, most commonly called Newell Canyon. In 1954 Jim Keane would found the Newell Lodge, the famous campgrounds in the Canyon. For many years after the accident, the Newell family, my family, was bullied and humiliated for the foolhearty trustworthiness by the citizens of Philo and Garrison. My father recounts many stories of how he would be bullied in the 1930s for an accident that had occured 50 years prior, and my grandfather suffered from such a thing as well. Even I, in my childhood in the 1950s-1960s, found ridicule from elder members. Despite their hatred, the citizens of Philo allowed the burying of Dolph Newell in their spanish church graveyard, a church built in 1834. (See chapter 13) Dolph Newell is buried next to the memorial obelisk of Eustace King, a WW2 veteran.

That disease got really bad, and I guess the whole world's failed. We're running low on supplies, so we're going to see what those 'UGR' people are like. Other than that, we've got a lot of people here now. If we stick it out a little while longer, we'll be a force for good.

Well, we've finally gone and done it. We've enclosed our home and built a sort of barracks. We're in debt $45,000 to those awful loan companies (Damn Big J Financial).
hope it's worth it. Those guys in the North told of their off-grid sustainablity, and they gave me this idea in the first place. Only difference is they live in a bunker, but we get all the sun we want! Going to start growing wheat soon. Got to go to Pilard to get me some seeds from Jeremy Chalms.

Big J Industries has been under large criticism after it was discovered Sunday morning that they were in contact with research corporation Scorpion-7 to make their food more addictive, using artificial means.
On Tuesday morning an independent study had been researched, headed by Daniel Alkoni, and discovered that the Big J Bigg Burger, Big J Mega Val-U Milkshake, and the rest of their food contained the chemicals: Slylophane, Glelodyne, Extrose, Bitrose, and Hydrogenated Seperated Ulidide, all of which are unapproved by the American Food Bureau.
Another study finds that the chemicals signifcantly weaken the consumer's immune system, finding that simple illnesses like the Common Cold easily take hold of the victim. The same study goes on to state that the chemicals cause intense ravenous appetite, even after being satisfied with the meal.

For the citizens of Philo, no challenge was too difficult, from the spanish explorers, to the defeat of Indian forces, and to the World Wars, Philo has been no stranger to sacrifce and duty. One example of such a truth is that of the Second World War. Philo gave 87% of it's population, a population of 1,009 people (467 women, 542 men) to fight in the war. While women could not fight in the conflict itself, they valiantly served as medics and helpers. The men in the war gave their all, with 57 of the 496 men serving giving their lives to our proud nation. Their bravery was celebrated in 1951 when Mayor Carlsbogg, a veteran of the war, built this very statue. This memorium is a testament to the American spirit, and ever-readiness of it's citizens to defend their homeland.
