Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Famous Americans) for Wednesday, July 10, 2024 (Season 40, Game 218):
In his 1999 memoir he wrote, “I had been shot down a short walk’s distance from the French-built prison, Hoa Lo”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Larry P. Wellington, an entrepreneur from Madison, Mississippi |
Alex Pribil, a fundraiser from Orlando, Florida |
Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, California (5-day total: $120,187) |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Yesterday, Isaac Hirsch became a 5-time champion; today, he goes for win #6 against Alex Pribil and Larry P. Wellington.
A few people around the Internet yesterday were already choosing to refer to Isaac as one of the all-time greats already. While I would definitely classify him as the strongest player to date in regular play this season, I definitely feel like I’d need to see Isaac play against some stronger opposition before I anoint him as one of the best players ever. There’s a big difference between playing against nervous regular-play challengers and playing against hardened veterans!
I’d also like to send my hopeful best wishes down to all of my friends in Texas who are dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl right now, especially my recapping colleague over at Fikkle Fame; I hope everyone is safe and that everyone can get back to their normal life soon.
I have an occasional mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
In his 1999 memoir Faith of my Fathers, John McCain wrote extensively about his POW experience in the Vietnam War; a great deal of which had been spent in Hỏa Lò Prison in Hanoi; it was referred to by American POWs as the Hanoi Hilton. McCain spent five and a half years as an American POW; afterwards, he became a member of the House of Representatives and Senate, representing Arizona, and was the 2008 Republican nominee for President.
Interestingly, prior to serving for the United States Navy in Vietnam, McCain was a one-day champion on the Art Fleming version of Jeopardy; he won on Friday, August 6, 1965, before losing to 5-time champion Bob Bovard in his title defense on Monday, August 9.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Isaac $16,800 Larry $10,600 Alex $5,600)
Isaac: Standard cover bet over Larry is $4,401. (Actual bet: $4,401)
Alex: You can’t win unless Isaac overbets. I think Larry is probably most likely to bet $6,201 here, so I would limit my bet to $1,200 or less and hope for a miss from Larry. (Actual bet: $4,000)
Larry: You have to bet at least $1,800 to have any chance of winning. Personally, I’d limit my bet here to $4,999 to have the best chance of taking second. (Actual bet: $6,201)
